I managed around 80 pages – frankly amazed I read that much. I knew I was in for plenty of early nineteenth century gothic storytelling, lust, adultery, murder, guilt, divisions of race and class and the consequences of transgression – I just found the very idea of all that in less than 300 hundred pages pretty wearying. Admittedly I had approached the book with grim resignation – never the best attitude to approach a book. ![]() I started reading Zofloya, or The Moor (1806) by Charlotte Dacre in the middle of a very busy, exhausting week, when my reading time was horribly short. This week for the first time I shall arrive having not read the book. On Wednesday of this week I will be attending my very small book group – essentially as things stand it is four of us meeting in a bar. ![]() ![]() ![]() In Lyra’s world, every human being has a daemon companion which takes the form of an animal. She makes rash decisions based on what others think, not what she feels she should do for herself. This novel does have positives, such as gay and POC representation, but for the most part, this novel is amateurly written, lacking substance, truth and any real value.įor example, readers should not take Grace for an example as someone trying to find themselves, as many 20-somethings are trying to do. ![]() From the summary alone, “Honey Girl” sounds like a story of self-discovery and self-love. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The London Underground Night Tube reopened last summer with the city’s other lines mostly up and running as they were before Covid. Not that the city’s promotion engine was waning. Of course the eyes of the world were fixed on London more than any other place throughout all the tumult-save for maybe Kyiv-reminding everyone that London is spectacular and it’s been a really long while since they visited. Then the fall brought chaotic drama to 10 Downing Street that finally calmed down with Rishi Sunak becoming prime minister in late October. Just consider last summer’s firehose alone: the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, Royal Ascot, RHS Chelsea Flower Show, Wimbledon, Boris’s resignation and, in the worst kind of end to the summer, the Queen’s death and weeks of mourning. But given the year the city has had, have citizens even noticed? The city is more indomitable than ever (much more on that in a bit). Despite crippling Covid lockdowns and economic devastation. ![]() |
